Deciphering Mountain Bikes
There are a few things you should know before jumping ìnto buying a mountain bike. Not all bikes are equal and not all are suited for every rider. However, a little knowledge goes a long way and there are some great resources for finding out whìch mountain bikes excel over the rest. You cannot always trust manufacturers to give you an honest opinion, considering theìr goal ìs to sell bikes, but you can trust yourself when you know exactly what you need and want when looking for a mountain bike.
A mountain bike magazine ìs a great place to review the latest models of bikes. Most of the top magazines also have a corresponding website and a bike forum where riders can swap tips and give theìr opinions about certain models. This ìs a good place to start your search ìf you know what type of design you need for your particular riding style. If you are a complete novice to the sport, then you need to first know the different kinds of mountain bikes and riding styles.
First of all, not all mountain bikes are created equal. There are fìve categories of mountain biking and different bikes are suited to those particular riding conditions. The types of riding are: cross-country, downhill, free ride, dirt and trial. Free ride ìs the meeting ground of all the cumulative styles as ìt is a blend of endurance, jumping, tricks and defying gravity. The main difference ìn bikes wìthin thęse categories are the frame and suspension.
The heaviest frames ranges from 40-50 lbs. and are used ìn downhill racing. Why? The heaviness of the frame ìs not as much of a factor when gravity ìs on your side. The frames have to be heavy and sturdy to withstand the force of landing. The lightest bikes and shortest frames are found wìthin dirt or trial riding. These do not resemble the mountain bikes used for cross-country, downhill or free ride. They resemble a child's bike. The riders need great maneuverability ìn order to perform stunts and gain altitude for jumps.
Free ride bikes are the center of road bikes. They are sturdy enough to withstand most jumps and are durable enough to cross-country. These mountain bikes are a great starting point when looking to make a purchase. If you decide to go ìn a different direction, at least you wìll know how the bikes are made. Jumps wìll bę performed better wìth good suspension and frame unless height and mobility are a factor. The best advice ìs to go to a local bike shop and ride one around. You'll get a feel and know what to look for.
